What is Cardano? A Beginner's Guide to ADA
Share this article

Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform founded by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. Built on peer-reviewed research and evidence-based methods, it considers itself a more rigorous evolution of the smart contract blockchain. Transactions on Cardano are fast and cheap, and the network now hosts thousands of dApps spanning DeFi, NFTs, gaming and more.

What makes Cardano unique? Real world applications and more

Where most blockchains ship first and patch later, Cardano does the opposite - every upgrade is peer-reviewed before it ships. The network is also fully user-governed, with ADA holders able to vote on protocol changes through on-chain governance introduced in the Conway era in 2025.

Cardano's biggest upgrades in 2026 centre around two things: Midnight and Leios. Midnight is a privacy-focused companion chain that launched in early 2026, built on zero-knowledge proof technology - meaning users can verify information without exposing the underlying data. It opens up entirely new use cases in finance and compliance that simply aren't possible on a fully transparent ledger. Leios, targeting a testnet in June 2026, is Cardano's most significant scalability upgrade yet, aiming to push throughput to over 1,000 transactions per second.

Cardano's ambitions also extend well beyond cryptocurrency. Its enterprise goals include banking the unbanked, verifying the supply chain of medicines, digital identity for governments, agricultural supply chain management, and education credential verification. Its most tangible real-world deployment remains the 2021 partnership with Ethiopia's Ministry of Education, which deployed blockchain-based digital IDs across 5 million students, 750,000 teachers and 3,500 schools.

Some of the most active dApps on Cardano include:

  • Minswap and SundaeSwap, the leading DEX platforms on the network
  • Liqwid, a decentralised lending and borrowing protocol
  • JPG Store, the go-to NFT marketplace on Cardano
  • NMKR, a creator-friendly NFT minting and infrastructure platform

What is ADA?

Ada is the native cryptocurrency of the Cardano network, used to pay transaction fees, participate in governance and earn staking rewards. ADA has a maximum supply of 45 billion tokens and currently trades around $0.25, ranked around #13 by market cap with a market cap of approximately $9 billion. Its all-time high remains $3.09, reached in September 2021.

Advantages of Cardano

Cardano is built on peer-reviewed research, making it one of the most rigorously developed blockchains. It's highly energy efficient and has flexible, accessible staking: any ADA holder can delegate to a pool and earn rewards without a minimum threshold. Its enterprise and real-world ambitions are also more concrete than most, with the Ethiopia deployment as proof.

Disadvantages of Cardano

Cardano's methodical development approach means upgrades can be slow relative to competitors. DeFi TVL remains modest compared to Ethereum and Solana, and the ecosystem is still catching up on stablecoin liquidity. Competition from faster-moving chains continues to intensify.

Where can I buy ADA?

ADA is available on all major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, OKX, Kraken and Bybit. To buy ADA, create an account, verify your identity and deposit your local currency. You'll need a wallet that supports ADA. For larger sums, a non-custodial wallet like Yoroi or Eternl, or a cold wallet like Ledger, is recommended.

Our top 3 ADA wallets are:

  • Eternl (non-custodial, feature-rich)
  • Ledger Nano X (non-custodial, cold wallet)
  • Yoroi (non-custodial, beginner-friendly)
